As a firm rooted in the historic city of Bethlehem, PA for nearly a century, it is part of our calling to honor, preserve, and reuse existing buildings. We have decades of experience working with historic structures both on and off the National Register of Historic Places, approaching all with the same desire to maximize existing characteristics to make for a vibrant space that will be utilized for many more years.

Our team has the expertise and experience required to evaluate the historic significance of existing structures and to design for its continued use. We have been tasked with the assessment of historic significance, the assessment and stabilization of physical conditions, the renovation of historic structures, designing sensitive additions, and the adaptive reuse of buildings that are historic in nature for modern use. Through this experience, we have worked with historic review boards across the United States and have become familiar with the requirements of projects that both fall within historic districts and receive grants for historic preservation.

Out buildings are one of our greatest assets and the Spillman team understands how important it is that the buildings fit into our environment, yet provide the modern amenities our students and faculty demand. Today, one of our frequent guests to the campus remarked that the new building we are in the process of erecting – an addition to a 100-year-old building – looked like it has always been there. Spillman Farmer Architects is creative, sensitive to how building materials impact the building, historically accurate, has an excellent ability to draw out the users’ needs and is truly a national-caliper firm.
