Shippensburg, PA | 63,000 SF
For its new Student Recreation Center, Shippensburg University envisioned spaces that would support fitness and wellness while providing a safe, secure environment for patrons. The 63,000 square foot building is the result of rethinking the way students use recreational facilities.
Instead of just a single court gymnasium used primarily for basketball, there are spaces that accommodate a wide variety of recreational and fitness activities, from cardio training areas full of the latest equipment like treadmills and ellipticals to flexible studios that accommodate everything from yoga to spinning classes. The 25,000 SF arena accommodates four basketball courts but can also be used for tennis, indoor soccer, or volleyball. Overlooking this area is a 200 meter suspended track. Also within the center is a fitness center with cardio machines, weight circuit machines, free weights and stretching and strengthening areas. Additional features include a wood-floored fitness studio that can be partitioned to accommodate activities ranging from aerobics to dance or martial arts, and two regulation-size racquetball courts.
